So What's This All About?
Two years ago, I had a keen interest in becoming a business broker myself as I've always felt a strong affinity with the industry...
This led me to delve into some thorough research.
What I discovered was surprising...
Despite the immense effort put into business brokering, there was little assurance or consistency in deal quantity or quality closed each year...
Unfortunately, the strategies & methods being employed for prospecting, nurturing and closing listings were hopelessly outdated, slow and extremely high resource intensive (i.e. time/energy/capital).
It's no wonder that the burnout and failure rate is so high for business brokers, and for those who do survive, attempting to scale up and maintain that trajectory year after year can be draining.
Yet, it doesn't have to be this way.
There are clear & killer bottlenecks & key challenges in the sales cycles.
As you know, there are two very distinct & challenging sales cycles...
1. Finding Deals & Winning Listings
Prospecting and generating demand so that sellers are convinced of your expertise & commit to list with your brokerage.
Bottleneck 1
This process is extremely time, energy and capital depleting - door knocking, cold calling and expensive (often ineffective) paid advertising, or hoping & waiting for referrals.
Bottleneck 2
It's largely a loosely targeted gunshot approach and highly unpredictable. This ultimately ends up in settling for what you can get - lots of lower yielding, lower quality listings, which brings additional headaches & resource demands.
Bottleneck 3
A professional business brokers skillset is far too valuable to be spent on this critical but mundane work. Not to mention the additional time it inevitably takes to track & follow-up with hundreds of prospects before they decide to 'let you in the door'.
2. Selling The Business
Once the real business of deal making and closing is in process, there are common reasons why the deal falls apart that could and should have been addressed much earlier on.
Challenge 1
The IBBA recently cited ‘unrealistic seller value expectation’ as one of the top reason deals fall apart. Sellers should be pre-educated, pre-framed and continually nurtured so that they hold realistic expectations throughout.
Challenge 2
Due diligence failure. Long drawn out or failed deals (poor books, bad buyers) that tie up resources and limit the number of done deals each year.
Challenge 3
Finding & connecting with high quality buyers for your seller. Referral partners for financing and buying.
